The Giving Tree Appeal 2016 was a HUGE success, thank you - and as ever, we have been blown away by the generosity the people and businesses of Reading.
Thanks to you all, over 1700 gifts were bought and delivered to 12 partner organisations and charities across Reading in time for Christmas parties and Chrismas Day. And our mydonate page for the project ensured that no-one missed out..
If you or your business would like to take part for 2017, do make contact and email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or give us a call.
What is The Giving Tree?
The Giving Tree provides Christmas gifts to disadvantaged children and young people in the local Reading community, and this ranges from babies up to teenagers who are living in care. Some children, particularly those in refuges, sometimes ask for gifts that they can give to their mums rather than something for themselves.
We work with our partners to find out what they would really like for Christmas, and you choose the gift tag for the child you would like to buy for - the tags specify a specific item asked for by a child, or simply provide the gender and age of the child and you can choose to buy something you think is apropriate.
The gifts are usually within the range of £15-£25, and must be new and unused.
How the Project Works
Our business members host 'branches' of the Giving Tree in their offices so their employees can take part, and we host two public trees.
The main Giving Tree can be found in The Oracle Shopping Centre in the weeks before Christmas, and a second public tree is in The Broad Street Mall. Both trees can be found next to the information desk for the centres.
To take part in the project as a member of the public, you simply pick a gift request from one of the public trees and return it UNWRAPPED to The Oracle Giving Tree before the deadline date (which is yet to be confirmed for 2017). The gifts are then collated and sorted out by Connect Reading ready for our charity partners to pick them up, and distribute them to the children.
Can't buy a present? You can donate funds, so no-one misses out..
Due to the scale of the project (and its growing every year!), there are often gifts that are not purchased, or that don't get to us in time to send out to the charities.
We have a donation page which enables funds to be raised to purchase the missing gifts, and to help ensure that all our beneficiaries have a happy Christmas. You can make a donation HERE
We would like to thank FineImages who donated the tags to the project, and The Oracle and Broadstreet Mall for their annual support.
